Is a new global consensus on disarmament and non-proliferation possible?
Presented by Ambassador Munir Akram,
Pakistan Mission to the United Nations
In recent years, the consensus underpinning disarmament and non-proliferation has eroded. The multilateral disarmament machinery is largely dysfunctional.
There are clear differences of perspective, approach and modalities among States to promote international and regional peace and security through disarmament and non-proliferation efforts.
The presentation would seek to:
- give a brief overview of the current international security environment including major regional hotspots
- outline some of the key factors that have contributed to an impasse
- offer broad elements which may serve as the basis for evolving a global consensus approach on disarmament and non-proliferation issues
UNU Vice Rector Ramesh Thakur will chair the event. As the format is interactive, the presentation is intended to generate wider discussion and exchange of ideas.
