Women In The Arab World: From Knowledge To Governance
(UNU-UN Midday Forum)

This forum took place on 19 March 2007, from 1:15-2:45pm, at Conference Room 7, UN Headquarters, New York. At the forum, Ms. Amat Al Alim Alsoswa, Assistant Secretary-General, Assistant Administator and Regional Director, UNDP Regional Bureau for Arab States, discussed the findings of the latest Arab Human Development Report, entitled “Towards the Rise of Women in the Arab World.”  This fourth issue in the UNDP-sponsored series of AHDRs concludes a comprehensive analysis of development deficits affecting the region by examining shortfalls in women’s empowerment.  The Report argues that the rise of women is in fact a prerequisite for Arab renaissance, inseparably and causally linked to the fate of the Arab world and its achievement of human development.
