Alejandro Andrade is UNU-ONY's multi-media Junior Professional Fellow

Brian Clayton is an American citizen originally from Saint Louis, Missouri. He holds a Master of Science in Development Finance from The University of Manchester in the United Kingdom. In March 2008, Brian participated in the Class Trip to Singapore where he met guest lecturers and key representatives from the Government and the private sector in order to understand important development dynamics within the city-state and in the region. His dissertation examined the impacts of Official Development Assistance versus migrant worker remittances on economic growth and resilience in Small Island Developing States in the South Pacific.

Brian’s interest in Oceania stems from his experiences living in the region where he completed a Bachelor of Arts in International Studies with a Pacific and East Asia focus from Hawaii Pacific University in Honolulu, Hawaii. He participated in a year-long international student exchange to Osaka Gakuin University in Osaka, Japan through which he earned a minor in Japanese language. Brian also has intermediate proficiency in French and has research experience on Africa and South Asia, primarily. Additional interests include indigenous and tribal peoples, international security, microfinance, trade, among others.

Brian has background as a Community Marketing Agent and Database Admissions Operator. He founded a project that focused on urban regeneration of Honolulu's Chinatown neighborhood by liaising university students with local artists, which fell in line with the City’s strategy to form an urban Arts District. Additionally, he has served as a Chief-Secretary of a philanthropic/ volunteering organization called Circle K International at the undergraduate level, which hosted events for adults with learning disabilities, children with chronic illness and planned regular beach clean-ups. Sydney Kinnear is originally from San Francisco and has a Bachelor of Arts’ Degree in sociology from the University of Chicago. For her senior thesis in sociology, Sydney analyzed the non-traditional roles of medical professionals in a hospital emergency department and how these tasks help shape their view of medical professionalism. While at Chicago, she also worked on clinical research in gastroenterology and with an elementary school on the south side of Chicago. Upon graduation, Sydney further developed this interest in public education by managing a small education non-profit in Chicago, which partnered university alumni clubs with Chicago public schools.

In 2006, Sydney moved to New York to work with the Center on Medicine as a Profession, a health policy research center at Columbia University. While at Columbia, Sydney co-authored a paper on the changing nature of public health initiatives, and coordinated a task force making recommendations to professional medical associations on how to reduce and regulate conflicts of interest with pharmaceutical companies.

Sydney speaks French and is interested in public health and education, and issues related to human rights and Africa.

Ranita Ragunathan is originally from Malaysia and has just recently earned a Master of Arts in Economics from New York University. She obtained her Bachelor of Science in Economics and Econometrics from the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom. Prior to graduate school, she worked as a financial data analyst in Singapore, focusing on currencies and derivatives. She completed an internship in the Policy Analysis and Monitoring Unit of the Office of the Special Adviser on Africa at the United Nations in November 2008, and hopes to further utilize her quantitative training in addressing issues related to sustainable development. In fulfillment of her Master's thesis component, she studied the role of informal credit markets in mitigating risk and the lessons they held for microfinance institutions. Ranita also has deeply-rooted interests in new institutional economics and the behavioural and experimental aspects of economic development. She speaks English, Malay and Cantonese fluently, and is currently working on perfecting her French.

Ekaterina Anyanova, assists with UNU-ONY's Policy Research and assists in the organization of UNU-ONY events [Policy Research Team and Event Team]

Ekaterina Anyanova is a PhD Student and is doing currently her PhD Studies in the University of Hamburg in the area of maritime security in the international field with the scholarship of the Friedrich-Ebert-Foundation (Germany). Born in Kaliningrad (Russia), Ekaterina Anyanova began studying in the Kaliningrad State University of Russia Faculty of Law in the same city, where she was employed for the reformation educational projects of the Council of Europe and CBSS. Later she got her LL.M Degree in International Law and Law of the Sea. She is also an associate at the International Max Planck Research School for Maritime Affairs and an Assistant Professor at the chair of International and European Law at the I. Kant State University of Russia. Ms. Anyanova speaks Russian, English, German, French, Spanish and Polish. She has published several articles on maritime affairs and international policy especially in the matters of international security.

Anna Chrisp, assists in the organization of UNU-ONY's events [Event Team]

Anna Chrisp has a Bachelors degree from the University of Sydney focusing on International Relations, French and Political Economy. After spending the 2006-2007 academic year on exchange at Sciences Po Paris, she remained in France and is currently completing a Masters in International Affairs at Sciences Po Paris, focusing on International Security. Anna is of Australian and New Zealand origin, speaks English and French and is learning Spanish.

Yuhong Li, assists in the coordiantion of UNU-ONY's communication and marketing activities [Marketing Team]

She holds a Master of Public Administration degree from Columbia University and a Master of Arts degree in development policy from Hiroshima University in Japan. Yuhong started her journalism career at a local TV station in Jilin, China in 1993. In 1997, she became an editor and reporter of the Oriental Horizon program at China Central Television and covered both domestic and international subjects. In 2002, she co-founded a media firm and served as the executive producer of a feature TV series on China's hot economic and financial topics. In 2005, Yuhong published her first book entitled The Bright College Years: Interviews with 21 Chinese Undergraduates at Yale University (China Youth Press). Yuhong speaks Chinese, English and Japanese.

Durlabh Sanskar Maharishi, assists in the organization of UNU-ONY events [Event Team]

Durlabh Sanskar Maharishi has been a journalist by profession and is currently pursuing Masters Degree in International Affairs on Environment, Sustainable Development and Risk Assessment at France’s prestigious institution – Institut d’Etudes Politiques - Sciences-Po, Paris. He is a graduate in journalism from the University of Delhi, India.

A young professional from India, he is witness to transition in action. As a journalist, he was moved by the intensity of today’s global transition: taking Statehood across State-lines with globalization. Thus his current studies in international political affairs on environment and sustainable development. As a globalist, Durlabh’s passion lies in policy making for global organizations. He intends to make a career in this domain. He has also worked as a Radio Jockey at the All India Radio, hosting his own show for an international audience. This experience gave him a firm belief in the power of communication through simple mass media. He plans to use his communication skills in the future for noble-sensitive purposes like the cause of the UN. His affair with the UN began when he represented Sciences-Po as a delegate of the UNEP during the National Model United Nations simulation in March 2008. And as a Junior Professional Fellow at the UNU, he is now turning his instincts into united reflexes. At the UNU, each reflex is one step closer to humanity.

Dini Silveira, is primarily responsbile for UNU-ONY's outreach and institutional development with Latin America and assists in teh organizatino of UNU-ONY events. [Latin America Team and Event Team]

Dini Silveira graduated from the University of Winnipeg with a degree in International Development and Environmental Studies. Her interests focus on international and sustainable development, international politics and the role of civil society organizations.

Throughout her undergraduate career, she was very involved with environmental and student movements: while serving as the co-coordinator for the Sustainable University Now, Sustainable Earth Together (SUNSET) Project, this student led initiative motivated the University of Winnipeg administration to promote more sustainable practices on campus, including its compliance with the Kyoto Protocol and the development of a Sustainability Office. As an elected member of the University of Winnipeg Students’ Association executive, she spearheaded the UWSA Sustainability Audit with the support of campus environmental groups.

In the summer of 2004, Ms. Silveira completed a practicum in International Development Studies in Peru, where she volunteered for government agencies and INGOS that provided social assistance for youth. She returned to Peru in 2005 to participate on water and sanitation study conducted by World University Services of Canada (WUSC) that assessed the social outcomes of water distribution systems built on rural Peruvian communities.

Prior to becoming a UNU Junior Fellow Professional, she worked as the Youth Programs Coordinator for the Canadian Community Economic Development Network (CCEDNet), where she actively facilitated the engagement of youth in the field of Community Economic Development as a way to foster citizenship development and to create positive social and economic change. She speaks Portuguese, English and Spanish, and has a working knowledge of French.

Ibrahim Tahri Lamthari, assists in the organization of UNU-ONY events, especially in the context of the UNU UN mid-day forums. [Policy research team]

Ibrahim Tahri Lamthari graduated from the SDA Bocconi School of Management with a Masters of Public Management in Milan, Italy. He previously earned a Bachelor Degree of Arts in International Studies, majoring in Political Science and European Studies and a minor in Business Administration, at Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane, Morocco. During the year 2004-2005, he studied in France at the Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris as an exchange student. He Moroccan and is fluent in Arabic, French, English, and Italian.

Daniela Michael, assists in the organization of UNU-ONY events, the Africa Series primarily. She also represents the UNU-ONY at the weekly UNCG meetings and administers the recruitment of Junior Professional Fellows. [Event team]

Daniela Michael has a Master's Degree in Africa and International Development Cooperation, as well as a Master of Science in Geography. Both of her master theses were conducted as minor field studies, the first one in Mozambique 2005 and the second one in Ethiopia 2007. For her study in Northern Mozambique, focusing on the implications of road infrastructure and transport conditions on food security, she received a scholarship from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA). In Ethiopia she investigated the importance of policy coherence in the international development cooperation between Ethiopia, Sweden and the EU. Her studies at Goteborg University, Sweden, centered on a holistic approach to global development. Through her field studies Daniela also applied her theoretical knowledge by interviewing farmers, government officials, and representatives of corporations and various organizations. In 2007 she did field work in Peru for an NGO, working on media and communication. She produced radio programs with women and youth groups in the countryside, with the aim of increasing their participation in society; she documented activities through photography and writing of articles; and she planned and conducted informative awareness raising assignments towards different target groups. Ms. Michael speaks Swedish, English and Spanish fluently and has basic knowledge of German.

Ken Stretch, assists in the organization of UNU-ONY events and assists with fund raising activities. [Event team]

Ken Stretch has an MA and a BA from McGill University in Montreal where he focused on international relations and international political economy. He spent the 2006/2007 academic year on exchange at the Institute des Etudes Politiques de Paris taking classes and finishing his MA thesis on the welfare state as a buffer to the displacements caused by immigration and trade liberalization. He has volunteered with the Sexual Assault Centre at McGill University, as well as the McGill Journal of Political Studies and McGill Improv, an improvisation theatre group.

Dina Abi Rached assist in coordinating UNU-ONY online activities

Dina Abi Rached has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology from Lebanese University and a Master's Degree in Public Health from the American University of Beirut. She completed an internship at the International Labour Organization (ILO) in Beirut, Lebanon. At the ILO, she carried out a study of AIDS/HIV awareness in the workplace, developed educational materials based on her findings and gave health education training sessions to employees of a private company. Her research highlights the misconceptions concerning HIV/AIDS among the general public and the potential benefits of workplace health education. Ms. Abi Rached speaks Arabic, French and English.

Maria Rosaria Venosa, assists in the organization of UNU-ONY events; particularly focusing on the UNU-Washington Series

Maria Rosaria Venosa has done studies in linguistics and translation with a focus on development issues. She graduated from the Universita' degli Studi di Salerno, Italy (First Class Hons) in 2001 in Modern Foreign Languages (English and French). From 1999 to 2000 she also undertook the ERASMUS Programme at the University of Reading, UK. A Masters degree at the University of East Anglia, Norwich, UK in Modernism (2001/2002) followed. She then moved on into research registering for a Master of Arts by Research in Translation Studies at the University of East Anglia, Norwich (2003).

She specializes in Intersemiotic and Intralingual translation. In the UK she also earned Teacher's certificates (CVS, ITT). Although her academic studies were mainly Language, Literature and Visual Arts related, throughout her life she worked for several NGOs and was part of fair traded societies. In particular, she volunteered for NEAD (Norfolk Education and Action for Development), Norwich, UK, from 2001 to 2006. She also gained first hand experience on Development Issues in Amman (Jordan) and Athens (Greece) where she cooperated with local international cooperation law firms. In Italy she volunteered for several non-profit organizations and worked as a co-editor, interpreter, translator, researcher, teacher. She speaks English, French, Italian and has basic understanding of Spanish and Portuguese.

Ms. Ida Folkesson assists with the coordination of UNU events and fund raising activities

Ida Folkesson has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science and International and Development Cooperation with a major in Latin American Studies. She is currently pursuing her Masters Degree in Human Rights Studies at the Institute for the Study of Human Rights, at Gothenburg University, Sweden. Year 2006/2007, she received a minor field study scholarship for realizing her Master thesis in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In her thesis, she examines how the violent conflicts between the drug traffic and the police, are affecting residents in poor communities- favelas. She conducted interviews with youths living in the favelas and with the military police working in these areas. During the past year she has also produced several news coverages in Brazil and Bolivia. These reports highlights the militia's increased control over poor communities, positive initiatives in the favelas in Rio, the use of coca leafs in Bolivia as well as Bolivian politics in connection with their new constitution; Asamblea Constituyente. Ms. Folkesson speaks Swedish, English, Portuguese, Spanish and French.

Charlotte Mansson has undertaken studies in International Law at the Universiteit Maastricht (Netherlands), the Raoul Wallenberg Institute (Sweden), and the University of Lund (Sweden), where she also completed her Master Degree. Her Master's thesis examined the immense problem of street children in Egypt from a legal and human rights pespective - research that was inspired from her human rights work as an intern at the Swedish Embassy. She has also interned at the United Nations Regional Office on Drugs and Crime for the Middle East and North Africa in Egypt, and has worked actively for many NGO's including the Hope Village Society, the Lawyers Group of Amnesty International, the Association on Foreign Affairs, and Save the Children. Her main research interests are Human Rights Law, Public International Law and Humanitarian Law.

Lamis Abdel-Aty is pursuing a master's degree in Political Science at McGill University. She currently holds a master's degree in Economics and a bachelor's degree in Political Science and Economics from the American University in Cairo. She worked at the Egyptian Ministry of International Cooperation, where she was involved in impact evaluation of foreign-funded development projects. Her current research is focused on theoretical explanations of humanitarian (non-)intervention, with particular emphasis on the cases of Somalia, Kosovo, and Rwanda.

Delphine Hayim completed her Master in Advanced Studies at the University Centre for International Humanitarian Law in October 2006 in Geneva, Switzerland. She studied four major topics: international public law, human rights, international humanitarian law and international criminal law. She earned her Bachelor Degree at the Graduate Institute of International Studies of Geneva, where she studied international law, international history and economics and political sciences. Delphine is particularly interested in the use of armed force in inter-state relations. She wrote her Master's thesis on the the legality of Israel's military operations in Lebanon.

Steen Videbeck is a Masters student in Applied Economics at Cornell University. In 2004 he graduated with a Master of Arts degree with Distinction in Economics from Victoria University of Wellington (VUW) in New Zealand. His research interests include development, environmental and energy economics. He has previously worked as researcher at the New Zealand Institute for the Study of Competition and Regulation, a research assistant at Cornell's Power Systems Engineering Research Center, and an economic analyst at the Bank of New Zealand.

Ted Alcorn's interests include global public health and institutional development. He has worked on a variety of documentary films in the New York area, including Ken Burns's upcoming PBS series on the American experience during the Second World War. At UNU-ONY, he will be helping to strengthen the office's ability to communicate through media and new technology. Raised in New Mexico, he studied film production, Spanish, and political-economy at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts.

Anamaria Nunez Zelaya is currently enrolled in a five year Master program in International Affairs focusing on International Development, at the Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris (Science-Po Paris), France. She earned the equivalent of a BA degree in Social Sciences with a special interest in Ibero-American studies in 2004. From 2004-5, she participated in a one year exchange program with Johns Hopkins University, in Baltimore MD, USA, focusing on public health and Latin American studies.

Njoya Hilary Tikum earned his LLM in International Business Law from the Central European University Budapest/New York, in June 2006. His focus was on alternative dispute resolution and Secured transactions. He also carries a Licence and a Maitrise in Law from the University of Yaounde II-Soa, Cameroon. He worked as an advocate trainee at Mbah Ndam and Associate Law firm in Yaounde, Cameroon and was jurist consult for International Tort for Tortured Victims Center Yaounde (ITT-VC). He is interested in International Politics, International Criminal Justice and Armed Conflicts. He is a research fellow at the Queens Research Institute London and is of Cameroonian Nationality.

Yiruo Ge is a student at Stony Brook University, State University of New York, marjoring in both Applied Mathematics and Statistics, and Economics. He will be graduating from college in May 2007 and plans on continuing his education in graduate school for his Master Degree. Before working as an intern at UNU-ONY, he acquired some work experience at the Division for Public Administration and Development Management of the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN-DESA) in New York. Yiruo speaks English and Mandarin. He is of Chinese Nationality.

Louise Bergstrom completed her MSc in History of International Relations at the London School of Economics and Political Science, United Kingdom, in 2005, focusing on inter-European relations. She earned her Bachelor Degree at Oxford University in Politics, Philosophy and Economics.

Paula Khalil earned her Master Degree in International Economy and French from Linkoping University, Sweden, in 2006. She has also studied business economy at the Montpellier Sup de Co in Montpellier, France. Paula is particularly interested in social and economic development and conflict prevention, matters which she treated in her bachelor thesis.

John Tzanos received his Master Degree in Political Science from the University of Linkoping, Sweden, in 2005. His focus was international relations and more specifically, development studies, human rights and democratization in the African context. He conducted research for his Bachelor Thesis in Namibia on the Democratic Rights of the San. John has also conducted assessment studies for municipalities.

Jean-Marie Chenou completed an M. Phil Degree in International Relations at the Pantheon-Assas University of Paris, France for which his research focused on multi-polarity in international politics, regionalization and international stability. Chenou holds an M.A. Degree in Public Law and Political Science with English and German from the University of Grenoble, France and a Bachelors Degree from the Albert-Ludwigs Univeristy in Freiburg, Germany. He is of Swiss nationality.

Joanna Godrecka has finished the first year of her Master Programme in International Careers at the Institut d'Etudes Politiques of Paris, France. She was previously awarded a B.A Degree in Philosophy and English from the Universite Paris IV-Sorbonne, France. Godrecka specializes in political and economic development and is particularly interested in education and the role of women in economic and social development mechanisms. She is of Polish nationality.

Leila Laouadi graduated from the School of International and Public Affairs of Columbia University in New York with a Masters in International Affairs. She carries a B.A. in Political Science and a Masters degree in Public Administration from the Institut d'Etudes Politiques of Paris. Her research is concentrated on the the Middle East with special interest on the rule of law and authoritative regimes. She now continues her Arabic and Middle East studies in Damascus, Syria.

Anila Duro obtained her BA Degree in International Criminal Justice from John Jay Colle ge of Criminal Justice, New York in 2005. She wrote her thesis on Factors and Theoretical Applications of Trafficking in Women in Eastern. Originally from Albania , Anila has a strong interest in the eradication and prevention of crime in the Balkans, with particular emphasis on Albania . She currently works as a tutor at John Jay Colle ge , New York where she is also the President of the United Nations Student Association.

Jibecke Jonsson has completed a Mphil degree in International Relations at the Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris for which she conducted research on the reconciliation process in Bosnia-and-Herzegovinia with a particular emphasis upon the social and emotional needs in post-conflict societies. A national of Sweden, she earned her BA Hons in Politics and International Relations with French from the University of Kent at Canterbury, UK. She has also worked with the International Service for Human Rights, a UN accredited NGO in Geneva. Ms. Jonsson is fluent in English, French, German, Danish and Swedish.

Nassim Majidi is a graduate student in International Relations and Development studies at the Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris and has received her Bachelors Degree at Cornell University. Having grown up in Iran, her geographical focus bears on the Middle East with a special interest in women's rights and women's role in Third World development.

Anne Kapstein is an International Human Rights Law student at the CUNY School of Law in New York. She carries a B.A. in Social Justice from Hamline University, where she focused on Women's Rights, Labor, and the effects of the market economy in developing nations.

Edouard de Ereno, with French and Spanish citizenship, has finished training in an Electricite de France subsidiary, SIIF Energies, at its law department under the Head of Legal, Thierry Clementz's direction. He is studying both at the Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris focusing on international relations and political science, and at La Sorbonne University, preparing his fourth year as a Law graduate.

Flaminia Lilli's areas of focus are Political economics, International Organizations policy and China studies. Ms. Lilli is doing a double masters degree at the Institut d'Etudes Politiques of Paris focusing on political sciences and Development studies, and at the Luiss University in Rome in international relations, for which she is writing a thesis on China.

Brigitte Omane's research interests are in conflict management, international mediation and cross-cultural communications. Ms. Omane has a B.A in French and Psychology from the University of Ghana and is pursuing a Masters degree in International Relations and Diplomacy at the John C. Whitehead School of Diplomacy and International Relations at Seton Hall University. She has completed an internship at the Embassy of Ghana, Havana Cuba during the summer of 2003 and is working in a work-study position at the John C. Whitehead School of Diplomacy. Ms. Omane is a native from Ghana.

Helene Gandois's centers of interest are on development economics, regional integration and conflict prevention. Ms. Gandois is studying at the Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris, concentrating on political science and international relations. She has done an internship with the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) during the summer of 2002 and has worked for the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA) in 2002-2003.

Muhammad Faridi is a student at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, City University of New York. He graduated in May 2004 and is planning on continuing his education in graduate or law school. His Major field of study at the university is Political Science and his Minors are Literature and History. His interests are socioeconomic development, human rights and their incorporation under international law, and current affairs in the Middle East and South Asia. He was born and raised in Pakistan.
