The objective of the event was to address questions raised about the effectiveness of the global institutions like the UN in promoting global governance.The discussion examined the popular thought that civil society can fill accountability gaps at the UN and other global agencies. Several policy-makers and activists around the world believe that a lack of civil society engagement of Global institutions reduces their accountability towards the affected people. So, can global governance in form of active global citizenship prove more effective? This UNU event was an attempt to find answer(s) to such questions.

The event saw an open debate on the findings and recommendations of the Civil Society and Accountable Global Governance project (CS-AGG). The project had 15 researchers from 5 continents who examined whether, in what ways, and to what extents citizen groups have made 13 global regulatory agencies answer to their public constituents. A book reflecting these studies will be published by the Cambridge University Press in 2009.

Beginning with opening remarks from Jean-Marc Coicaud - Director, UNU New York office, six expert speakers made presentations related to the topic.

The speakers for the event were;

Professor Jan Aart Scholte -University of Warwick and the London School of Economics;

Professor Kerstin Martens - University of Bremen, Germany;

Professor Alnoor Ebrahim - Harvard Business School, USA;

Dr. Nata Duvvury & Dr. Carolyn Long - researchers, International Center for Research on Women (ICRW);

Dr. Salil Shetty - Director, UN Millennium Development Goals Campaign.

The event was co-sponsored by Centre for the Study of Globalization and Regionalization (CSGR) - University of Warwick, the Ford foundation, SIDA - Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency and the United Nations University.
