UNU Panel: For the Rule of Law - Criminal Justice Teaching and Training Across the World

UNU-ONY organised a panel discussion about the possibilities of integrating the United Nations crime prevention and criminal justice standards and norms into the mainstream international criminal justice education.

The panel was based on the recently published book "For the Rule of Law: Criminal Justice Teaching and Training Across the World", edited by Slawomir Redo and Kauko Aromaa. More information on the book is available HERE

Bringing together 21 contributions from 26 authors, this anthology has taken up the challenge of establishing "a common language of justice" to facilitate the realization of the rule of law worldwide. The authors establish a broad international context in which to better understand the importance of the promotion of human rights and the rule of law within the criminal justice sector, the universalization of standards, and security and justice reforms.

Speakers included:
Rosemary BARBARET, Professor, John Jay College of Criminal Justice, City University of New York and former Chair of the International Division of the American Society of Criminology;

Jean-Marc COICAUD, Director, United Nations University Office at the United Nations, New York;

Damásio DE JESUS, General Director of Faculty of Law Damásio de Jesus and founder of Patronato Professor Damásio de Jesus for alternative penalties;

Mangai NATARAJAN, Professor, John Jay College of Criminal Justice, City University of New York

Attendees from academia, the United Nations, NGOs and civil society joined a combination of contributors to the book and other international criminal justice experts to discuss the challenges and opportunities relating to the teaching of criminal justice in the global context and at the local level.
