New UNU Rector - Professor Konrad Osterwalder has been appointed
the next rector of UNU. Professor Osterwalder assumed the Rectorate of
UNU at a ceremony held at UNU on Friday, August 31.

Maria Rosaria Venosa, assists in the
organization of UNU-ONY events; particularly focusing on the UNU-Washington
Series
Maria Rosaria Venosa has done studies in
linguistics and translation with a focus on development issues. She graduated
from the Universita' degli Studi di Salerno, Italy (First Class Hons) in 2001 in
Modern Foreign Languages (English and French). From 1999 to 2000 she also
undertook the ERASMUS Programme at the University of Reading, UK. A Masters
degree at the University of East Anglia, Norwich, UK in Modernism (2001/2002)
followed. She then moved on into research registering for a Master of Arts by
Research in Translation Studies at the University of East Anglia, Norwich
(2003).
She specializes in Intersemiotic and
Intralingual translation. In the UK she also earned Teacher's certificates (CVS,
ITT). Although her academic studies were mainly Language, Literature and Visual
Arts related, throughout her life she worked for several NGOs and was part of
fair traded societies. In particular, she volunteered for NEAD (Norfolk
Education and Action for Development), Norwich, UK, from 2001 to 2006. She also
gained first hand experience on Development Issues in Amman (Jordan) and Athens
(Greece) where she cooperated with local international cooperation law firms. In
Italy she volunteered for several non-profit organizations and worked as a
co-editor, interpreter, translator, researcher, teacher. She speaks English,
French, Italian and has basic understanding of Spanish and Portuguese.

Charlotte Mansson
has undertaken studies in International Law at the Universiteit Maastricht
(Netherlands), the Raoul Wallenberg Institute (Sweden), and the University of
Lund (Sweden), where she also completed her Master Degree. Her Master’s thesis
examined the immense problem of street children in Egypt from a legal and human
rights pespective - research that was inspired from her human rights work as an
intern at the Swedish Embassy. She has also interned at the United Nations
Regional Office on Drugs and Crime for the Middle East and North Africa in
Egypt, and has worked actively for many NGO’s including the Hope Village
Society, the Lawyers Group of Amnesty International, the Association on Foreign
Affairs, and Save the Children. Her main research interests are Human Rights
Law, Public International Law and Humanitarian Law.

Lamis Abdel-Aty is pursuing a master's degree in Political Science at McGill University. She currently holds a master's degree in Economics and a bachelor's degree in Political Science and Economics from the American University in Cairo. She worked at the Egyptian Ministry of International Cooperation, where she was involved in impact evaluation of foreign-funded development projects. Her current research is focused on theoretical explanations of humanitarian (non-)intervention, with particular emphasis on the cases of Somalia, Kosovo, and Rwanda.

Delphine Hayim completed her Master in Advanced Studies at the University Centre for International Humanitarian Law in October 2006 in Geneva, Switzerland. She studied four major topics: international public law, human rights, international humanitarian law and international criminal law. She earned her Bachelor Degree at the Graduate Institute of International Studies of Geneva, where she studied international law, international history and economics and political sciences. Delphine is particularly interested in the use of armed force in inter-state relations. She wrote her Master's thesis on the the legality of Israel's military operations in Lebanon.

Steen Videbeck is a Masters student in Applied Economics at Cornell University. In 2004 he graduated with a Master of Arts degree with Distinction in Economics from Victoria University of Wellington (VUW) in New Zealand. His research interests include development, environmental and energy economics. He has previously worked as researcher at the New Zealand Institute for the Study of Competition and Regulation, a research assistant at Cornell’s Power Systems Engineering Research Center, and an economic analyst at the Bank of New Zealand.

Ted Alcorn’s interests include global
public health and institutional development. He has worked on a variety
of documentary films in the New York
area, including Ken Burns’s upcoming PBS series on the American
experience during the Second World War. At UNU-ONY, he will be helping
to strengthen the office’s ability to communicate through media and new
technology. Raised in New Mexico, he studied film production, Spanish,
and political-economy at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.
Anamaría Núñez Zelaya is currently enrolled in a five year Master program in International
Affairs focusing on International Development, at the Institut d’Études
Politiques de Paris (Science-Po Paris), France. She earned the equivalent of a BA degree in
Social Sciences with a special interest in Ibero-American studies in
2004. From 2004-5, she participated in a one year exchange
program with Johns Hopkins University,
in Baltimore MD,
USA, focusing on public health
and Latin American studies.
Njoya Hilary Tikum earned his LLM in International Business Law
from the Central European University Budapest/New York, in June 2006.
His focus was on alternative dispute resolution and Secured
transactions. He also carries a Licence and a Maîtrise in Law from the University of Yaoundé II-Soa, Cameroon. He worked as an advocate trainee at Mbah Ndam and Associate
Law firm in Yaoundé, Cameroon and
was jurist consult for International Tort for Tortured Victims Center Yaoundé (ITT-VC). He is interested in International Politics, International
Criminal Justice and Armed Conflicts. He is a research fellow at the
Queens Research Institute London and is of Cameroonian Nationality.

Yiruo Geis a student at
Stony Brook University, State University of New York, marjoring in both
Applied Mathematics and Statistics, and Economics. He will be graduating
from college in May 2007 and plans on continuing his education in
graduate school for his Master Degree. Before working as an intern at
UNU-ONY, he acquired some work experience at the Division for Public
Administration and Development Management of the UN Department of
Economic and Social Affairs (UN-DESA) in New York. Yiruo speaks English
and Mandarin. He is of Chinese Nationality.

Louise Bergström completed her MSc in History of
International Relations at the London School of Economics and Political
Science, United Kingdom, in 2005, focusing on inter-European
relations. She earned her Bachelor Degree at Oxford University in
Politics, Philosophy and Economics.

Paula Khalil earned her Master Degree in International Economy
and French from Linköping University, Sweden, in 2006. She has also
studied business economy at the Montpellier Sup de Co in Montpellier,
France. Paula is particularly interested in social and economic
development and conflict prevention, matters which she treated in her
bachelor thesis.

John Tzanos received his Master Degree in Political Science
from the University of Linköping, Sweden, in 2005. His focus was
international relations and more specifically, development studies,
human rights and democratization in the African context. He conducted
research for his Bachelor Thesis in Namibia on the Democratic Rights of
the San. John has also conducted assessment studies for municipalities.

Jean-Marie Chenou completed an M. Phil Degree in International
Relations at the Pantheon-Assas University of Paris, France for which
his research focused on multi-polarity in international politics,
regionalization and international stability. Chenou holds an M.A. Degree
in Public Law and Political Science with English and German from the
University of Grenoble, France and a Bachelors Degree from the
Albert-Ludwigs Univeristy in Freiburg, Germany. He is of Swiss
nationality.

Joanna Godrecka has
finished the first year of her Master
Programme in International Careers at the Institut d’Etudes Politiques
of Paris, France. She was previously awarded a B.A Degree in Philosophy
and English from the Université Paris IV-Sorbonne, France. Godrecka
specializes in political and economic development and is particularly
interested in education and the role of women in economic and social
development mechanisms. She is of Polish nationality.

Laouadi graduated from the School of International and Public
Affairs of Columbia University in New York with a Masters in International
Affairs. She carries a B.A. in Political Science and a Masters degree in
Public Administration from the Institut d’Etudes Politiques of Paris. Her
research is concentrated on the the Middle East with special interest on the
rule of law and authoritative regimes. She now continues her Arabic and
Middle East studies in Damascus, Syria.

Jibecke Jönsson has completed a Mphil degree in International Relations at the
Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris for which she conducted research on
the reconciliation process in Bosnia-and-Herzegovinia with a particular
emphasis upon the social and emotional needs in post-conflict societies. A
national of Sweden, she earned her BA Hons in Politics and International
Relations with French from the University of Kent at Canterbury, UK. She has
also worked with the International Service for Human Rights, a UN accredited
NGO in Geneva. Ms. Jönsson is fluent in English, French, German, Danish and
Swedish.

Nassim Majidi is a graduate student in International Relations and Development
studies at the Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris and has received her
Bachelors Degree at Cornell University. Having grown up in Iran, her
geographical focus bears on the Middle East with a special interest in
women's rights and women's role in Third World development.

de Ereño, with French and Spanish citizenship, has finished training in an Electricité de France subsidiary, SIIF Energies, at its law
department under the Head of Legal, Thierry Clementz's direction. He is studying both at the Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris

Sorbonne University, preparing his fourth year as a Law graduate.

Flaminia Lilli's areas of focus are Political economics, International
Organizations policy and China studies. Ms. Lilli is doing a double
masters degree at the Institut d’Etudes Politiques of Paris focusing on
political sciences and Development studies, and at the Luiss University in
Rome in international relations, for which she is writing a thesis on China.

Brigitte Omane's research
interests are in conflict management, international mediation and
cross-cultural communications. Ms. Omane has a B.A in French and Psychology
from the University of Ghana and is pursuing a Masters degree in
International Relations and Diplomacy at the John C. Whitehead School of
Diplomacy and International Relations at Seton Hall University. She has
completed an internship at the Embassy of Ghana, Havana Cuba during the
summer of 2003 and is working in a work-study position at the John
C. Whitehead School of Diplomacy. Ms. Omane is a native from Ghana.

Helene Gandois's centers of interest are on development economics, regional integration and
conflict prevention. Ms. Gandois is studying at the Institut d’Etudes
Politiques de Paris, concentrating on political science and international
relations. She has done an internship with the Organization for Economic
Co-operation and Development (OECD) during the summer of 2002 and has worked for the
West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA) in 2002-2003.

Muhammad Faridi is a student at John Jay College
of Criminal Justice, City University of New York. He graduated in
May 2004 and is planning on continuing his education in graduate or law
school. His Major field of study at the university is Political Science
and his Minors are Literature and History. His interests are
socioeconomic development, human rights and their incorporation under
international law, and current affairs in the Middle East and South Asia. He
was born and raised in Pakistan.
