Mandate

As part of its mandate to serve the United Nations University, UNU-ONY has a multifaceted mandate with an overarching mission to showcase and make UNU’s Research and Programmes (RTCP) available to the UN Secretariat, UN Permanent Missions, NGOs, academics and civil society. In this regard, UNU-ONY carries out its work in the following six main areas of activity:

  • Administrative: In cooperation with UNU Centre and UNU RTC/Ps, UNU-ONY services a number of administrative responsibilities related to personnel, administrative, procurement, travel, contract and finance.

  • Dissemination/Communication: Showcasing the work of UNU, particularly through public events organized in the UN Secretariat.

  • Political and diplomatic linking: Making UNU a stakeholder and full-fledged partner of the UN system, i.e., its agendas, processes and results.

  • Academic interplay: Bridging the intellectual and institutional voice of UNU with the UN System and Academia in the Americas.

  • Fundraising: Given its geographic proximity to numerous foundations in the New York-Washington D.C. areas, UNU-ONY plays a role in fundraising.  This role can be accomplished at three levels: project level, programme (RTC/Ps) level, and the overall UNU System level.

  • Institutional development: Advising and assisting the UNU Centre and RTC/Ps concerning possibilities for new institutional relationships, the establishment of regional or sub-regional facilities for existing RTC/Ps and in the conclusion of research and capacity-development agreements with governments, UN system, institutions and organizations.
