Symposium on Sustainability in Fishing Industry
The UNU in Tokyo hosted a Symposium on Fisheries Resources and their Overexploitation.... The UNU hosted the International Marine Environment Symposium in Tokyo. Conservationists and fishing industry representatives took the podium under the banner of "Marine Reserves for Sustainable Sushi". The symposium, attended more by more than 200 delegates, was organised by Greenpeace Japan to encourage more open and constructive dialogue on marine environment issues. Dramatic Impact of the UNU Report for the Cloning Debate
The UNU Report initiated the Reopening of the Cloning Debate... Last year the UNU released a report saying that there should not be a ban on reproductive human cloning. It reopened the debate on cloning and cloning ban. The scientists stress that circumstances have changed and human cloning is necessary for research. The UN issued a global human cloning ban in March 2005. The ban was approved by the UN after fours years of debate. In 2005 both reproductive and research cloning were banned. In 2005 the Assembly declared all cloning incompatible with human dignity and protection of life, voting 84 in favour, 34 against, 37 abstaining and 36 absent, after a decade of work on reproductive cloning by the International Bioethics Committee (IBC) of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).21 October, 2008

The Conference on Environment, Forced Migration and Social Vulnerability was hosted by the United Nations University in Bonn last week.... The Conference on Environment, Forced Migration and Social Vulnerability (www.efmsv2008.org) was devoted to the first two year long comprehensive empirical study, funded by the European Commission. The main issue of the research was whether and to which extent the environment problems influence migration decisions. UNU-ONY: Africa Series Three-- The Social and Economic Dimensions of HIV/AIDS in Africa
After holding Africa Series One and Two, UNU-ONY successfully organized the third symposium--the UNU-Cornell Africa Series.The information of webcasting and presentations of the speakers have been available on the website. After holding Africa Series One and Two, UNU-ONY successfully organized the symposium of the UNU-Cornell Africa Series-- Afirica Series Three: the social and economic dimensions of HIV/AIDS in Africa on 9 September 2008 at the UN Headquarters.
There were 20 speakers and around 200 audience attended the whole day symposium. UNU organized video conferences and colleagues from Accra, Addis Ababa, participated in the symposium for the morning session.

UNU documentary is finalist for major award
Saving the Ayuquila River, a video documentary and e-case study developed by UNU Media Studio, has been selected as a finalist in the Stockholm Challenge Award 2008. Winners will be announced during a ceremony at Stockholm City Hall on May 22.
