UNU together with Kirin Holdings Co. Ltd. marked the successful completion of the studies of the 2008-2009 group of UNU-Kirin Fellows at the National Food Research Institute (NFRI) in Tsukuba under the UNU-Kirin Fellowship Programme on 2 April 2009. The graduation ceremony, held in the Elizabeth Rose Conference Hall at the UNU Headquarters Building in Tokyo, was followed by an impressive presentation from the fellows of their research findings during their year of training at the NFRI.

The five young food scientists from Asia -- Mr. H. Umesh Hebbar (India), Ms. Munkhtsetseg Baatar (Mongolia), Ms. Rachel Ramos Elano (Philippines), Ms. Nazma Shaheen (Bangladesh), and Mr. Pramuan Saithong (Thailand) -- were awarded UNU fellowship certificates and gifts from Kirin Holdings.

The UNU and the Kirin Holdings Company signed the agreement establishing the UNU‑Kirin Fellowship Programme for an initial period of five years in December 1992. The first group of fellows started their training in April 1993. Under this accord, a total of 80 young scientists from developing countries, particularly in Asia, conducting postgraduate and post-doctoral research in food science and technology have received fellowships to aid their work over the past 16 years.

UNU warmly congratulates the graduating fellows and expresses its sincere gratitude to Kirin Holdings and the NFRI for their continued support of this important programme.
