UNU teaches on UN

2 December, 2008

Vienna Colloquium.jpg On 22 November 2008 a Central, East and Southeast European Regional Colloquium on Innovative Techniques for Teaching about the United Nations System "Can "United Nations" be taught?" took place. The colloquium was organized by the Academic Council on the United Nations System (ACUNS), the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna, the Austrian Science and Research Liaison Office (ASO) in Ljubljana, and the Central and Eastern European International Studies Association CEEISA.

The colloquium was devoted to the issue of how the United Nations as a subject can best be addressed at universities. Speakers exchanged their experiences about inter-active teaching techniques with the hope of establishing a network of teachers and a compendium of effective activities. The participants discussed innovative initiatives on teaching about the UN system.

Director of the Office of the United Nations University at the United Nations, New York, Jean-Marc Coicaud also contributed his ideas on the topic. Speaking via video, he summarised what he considered the current limitations of existing teaching techniques and ways to overcome these. He also outlined the importance of the use of information technology to disseminate knowledge about the United Nations to people around the world, giving the example of recent initiatives of webcasting and online content instigated by the UNU New York Office.
