Through the conflicts that occurred during the last several decades in different parts of the world, the international community witnessed the emergence of a new type of diplomacy.  According to the book, humanitarian diplomacy involves activities carried out in support of their own objectives and programs by humanitarian institutions and personnel, as distinct from diplomacy exercised by traditional diplomats.

The volume analyzes this new concept by in a series of 14 case studies authored not only by professional policy analysts, but by humanitarian practitioners themselves.   Those practitioners, who often led humanitarian operations in different parts of the world and across various time frames, Share their experiences in locations as diverse as the Balkans and Sudan, North Korea and Iraq.
